When to Limp in

August 24th, 2010

While I hate to admit it, there are a few times in poker games and tournaments when limping into a hand can be a good idea. The times are generally few and far between, but since there are exceptions to every rule, i thought it only fair to explore these times as well as why I think that limping in is gereally the Great Satan of poker. The fact is, there are times when limping into a hand can be the smartest play. Here are a few occasions when it’s cool to limp in.

1. When you’ve got the nuts. If you’ve got a monster starting hand, like pocket Aces or A-King suited, then limping in can be a good way to get into a hand without your opponents having any clue about the strength of your cards.

2. If you’re at an overly passive table. If you’re sitting at a table full of opponents who are loathe to put their chips into the pot, then you’re probably not going to see a whole lot of pre flop raises. SInce you’re not likely to have to fold beofre seeing the flop, you can take a few more risks with by limping in with subpar hands and hoping that the flop improves them.

See? There are a few times when limping in can pay off. Just don’t start limping in every time you have cards in front of you at Everest Poker telecharger.

Online Gambling

July 30th, 2010

In the ever-continuing struggle to get poker online, and indeed online gambling, legal everywhere in the world, there has come some bad news from Sweden. Now, you would think a country as open-minded and accepting as Sweden would not have a problem with poker games, but sadly, we still have some hurdles to leap in this world.

Unfortunately, Sweden sued some online bookers to prove they couldn’t be allowed and succeeded. EU countries have the right to ban online gambling The European Union Court of Justice ruled yesterday, according to the news agency Reuters.

The Swedish case before the court concerned newspapers running ads for foreign bookmakers, the Reuters report said.

Sweden had prosecuted on the basis of violating the countries lottery laws, the individuals then appealed the prosecution and the ECJ was consulted, Reuters said.

ECJ found in favor of the right of countries to ban online gambling being consistent with “community law”, but would not allow countries, such as Sweden, to impose what it termed “discriminatory penalties”, Reuters explained.

I guess I understand if Sweden has banned online gaming that doesn’t fir with the country’s gambling laws, but nonetheless we need a worldwide, uniform law regarding online poker, and online gambling. Only then can we be a truly free people to play at Everest.

Jason DeWitt

July 19th, 2010

Jason DeWitt won the $5,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament (Event #17) for $818,959 at the World Series of Poker on Friday morning. It is his first career WSOP gold bracelet victory for DeWitt, an Indiana native now living in the Atlanta area. The 26-year-old poker pro owns a condominium, which he expects to pay off in full now that he has achieved a huge win.

DeWitt has seven WSOP in-the-money finishes on his blossoming resume, including at least one cash in each of the last five years at the WSOP. He has come close to winning a bracelet twice before, finishing third in a pot-limit Hold’em event last year, and second in a no-limit event a few days later.

He conquered a massive field size of 792 very tough players en route to the title. It was the largest $5,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em poker tournament in WSOP history. Attendance increased by 21 percent over last year, when there were 655 entries. Sam Trickett, from Nottingham, Great Britain, was the runner up. He is a former professional soccer player who suffered an injury that ended his athletic career. He turned to poker games and has been playing professionally since then. He collected a consolation prize amounting to $505,725, which now gives him $767,138 in WSOP career earnings. He barely missed becoming the third WSOP gold bracelet winner this year from the U.K. Brits now have two wins, two seconds, and a third-place finish at this year’s Series.

Seating was packed to capacity. There were several hundred viewers most of the night. The late-night atmosphere was dominated by a rowdy group of British players, who ringed the final table cheering on their fellow countryman. The British group, numbering between 15-20 players, frequently hummed and whistled the memorable battle march from “The Great Escape.” At one point, English spectators grew tired of drinking draft beer and ordered six bottles of Cristal champagne. The bar tab was $4,600.

Enthusiastic about your beer and local traditions? Ever been to a brewery? Well it could turn out to be a good outing! There’s the 300 year-old brewery in Faversham, Kent in Southeast England. The entire visit here normally takes about 2 hours, including the tasting and the Brewery Store visit where you can get mementos and of course some tasty beer! An additional place to visit for a tour of a very fine brewery is The Hogs Back Brewery, which is positioned in the village of Tongham, Surrey, between Farnham and Guildford just off the A31 ?Hogs Back? road. It is found within 16th century farm buildings in this quaint small village. You may expect a generous amount of sampling of the award winning beers, and ales they create. ‘Our flagship real ale, ?TEA? (Traditional English Ale), has proved to be a favourite of cask conditioned ale drinkers throughout the UK and is the proud winner of many awards’. Touring local independent breweries is like a walk in the park with special little pleasures, taste-testing several distinct flavors of beers and ales. A lot of of the breweries have cute little eateries where you can sit and eat an amazing meal after all of the walking around. You may even come to feel a little drunk soon after all the sampling! In 1970 there became a new progression and movement in microbreweries. Small business entrepreneurs turned a small business with considerable profit to producing prime quality brews that sell in the UK and abroad. These microbreweries also offer tours as well. Basic Poker Player Types

July 8th, 2010

Every online poker player is different, and each can play the same hand totally differently than another player at the table. But basically, most poker players fit into five basic types.

Look for these characteristics in your opponents when you are playing online poker:

* Rocks - these are super tight players. They hardly play any hands, and when they do, it is in a passive style. They rarely act aggressively and can be forced to fold. They are apt to check or call rather than raise, and tend to be predictable in their action.

* Maniacs - these players believe that any two cards can win and play that way. They like to bet big and often, and win through intimidation rather than with their cards. Eventually though this type of player runs into a strong hand that won’t back down and they give up their chips. Avoid mixing it up these players unless you do have a premium hand, then re-raise them.

* Calling stations - these players can’t bear to lay down a hand and will call every bet even when it’s obvious they up against a stronger hand. These are the players to look for and target since they will build bigger pots.

* TAGs - these are aggressive players who fold most starting hands. When they do enter a pot, it typically with a raise. When these types bet, it most often means they’ve got a big hand.

* Chameleons - these players mix up their play. They go from acting like maniacs to rocks and then tight aggressive. It is hard to ever get a read on them and their online poker strategy is confounding to other players. You can’t predict what they will do, so always be aware of them when they are seated to your left.

Some poker games, such as Omaha 8 Hi-Lo or Stud Hi-Lo, split the pot between two winners. Although these are poker games with the same hand rankings and betting structures as single winner games, like Texas Hold ‘Em, the strategies for making a profit are far different.

When you are playing split pot games, keep these tips in mind at the casino:

* Remember, if the pot is going to be split, then you are getting a much smaller return on any bet invested into the pot compared to single winner games. For instance, if the bet is 2 into a pot of 6, and you win half of it, your take is 4 compared to 8 in a single winner game. This lower return on investment should be factored into your decision before making any call.

* When you are playing split pot games, orient yourself to scoop the whole pot whenever possible. Don’t chase after split pots with speculative hands. Look for those opportunities when you are getting both high and low end hands, or when no low-end hand materializes in Omaha 8.

* In general, if you are playing to win half the pot, the low end is more likely to materialize in a win than a high hand pursuit. It is easier to catch a rag to complete a low end hand and low end hands have the potential to improve to better hands. Marginally good hands are easily beat in these games.

Let the Little Ones Go

April 22nd, 2010

Let the Little Ones Go As poker players, we sometimes develop unnatural and unhealthy attachments to our poker cards. We want to hold our cards, cherish them, and keep them safe from the muck pile. The problem with all this card protection, however, is that sometimes it is simply not merited. Sometimes the little cards are not worth the effort that it takes to stay in the round. You need to be able to let the little ones go if you really want to play a top notch poker online game. When I talk about little cards versus big cards I am talking about the insufficient and low scoring cards verus the cards with potential value. Some cards are simply too low valued or too improbable to merit being kept in your hand. Every time that you hold on to a card, you are required to keep paying into the pot. If you are holding a pair of fours, or other similarly low valued cards, there is no way that you would be able to win at the showdown. That means that you will never, ever, be able to recoup your expenses. You need to let go of the low valued cards to save your money for the hands that actually matter.

I am often loath to make distinctions on such a hazy line as gender, but I think there is something to be said about the ways that the Average Man and the Average Woman approach the poker table. You could play like the Average Man or the Average Woman, no matter your actual gender. It is all about mental approach and understanding of the game.

For example, the Average Man plays loose at the table pre-flop. This tendency tends to be amplified if they are playing against a woman, perhaps because some cave man instinct kicks in that urges them to be nice to womenfolk. Or maybe they are just looking to score in more ways than one. Whatever the actual reason behind the loose playing style of men, it is a proven fact that they are less disciplined at the poker online table.

On the other side of the gender divide you have the Average Woman. She is distinguished by her tight playing style, analytical playing style, and intense concentration. Unlike the Average Man, she only plays hands that she thinks will win. She does not often bluff, or show off at the online poker table.

Knowing the gender differences in playing styles puts you in an excellent position to understand why people do the things they do at the table. It will also let you know the gender of your favorite playing style.

The Power of Fold Equity

December 16th, 2009

You are in a tight Texas Hold ‘em poker game, and look down at a strong starting hand, such as Ace-King. You call the blind to see the flop, which brings two Kings, giving you trips with an Ace kicker. Your hand easily looks to be best since it is a rainbow board with no straight possibilities. Is this a good place to shove in all your chips since your are almost guaranteed a win? The answer is no.

First of all, shoving will most likely chase away the other players when you want to keep them betting into the pot. With a monster hand like this, you want the pot to be a monster too. The logic is you can double up if someone calls your all-in. However, although your hand looks to be a winner, there is always the possibility that a caller is holding a King too and a kicker that pairs the turn or river. It is a long shot risk, but still possible.

The key reason shoving is not good here is that you lose fold equity. If you put an poker opponent all-in, then you lose fold equity - your opponent has nothing left to lose and goes to the river.

By making a more standard 3x bet, you might get a call and still have the power to force a fold on the turn or the river. Fold equity lets you retain control of the action. Once a casino player is all-in, there is no more action, and if you’re not holding the absolute nuts, luck can always go against you.

Perhaps you’re an occasional bowler looking to treat this intricate sport with new respect. Should that be the case, this is major beginning in your development as a dedicated bowling competitor. Our introduction to A Bowler’s Development stand as essential reading. Pros in your city’s bowling pro shop can help bowlers tap bowling talent. Just like a lot of sports, you get back what you put in (from the ball return - hah). Just kidding. Fine, if only it were that simple. Don’t fret, we’ll have you throwing your way.

You’ll definitely want to invest a little in tailored bowling supplies at a nearby bowling pro shop. Rentals and house balls suck. It’s no joke, have your private ball drilled for custom finger holes, and your game will benefit. A correctly weighted bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. The same goes for having comfortable bowling shoes which smell fresh, look good and help your foot work.

Now that you may have previous found good supplies, listen to another important piece of bowling advice: aiming the ball. When you face the pins, don’t actually aim for your actual target, the pins. Line up using the markings like a gunsight. What’s the point? It’s less difficult to hit a mark which sits nearer. To get the most out of your aim, make sure you stand in the same position on the wood every approach. Only then you can make small adjustements on your aim using the arrows in the lane.

What about hooks, to get ten pin explosion? It is our next best piece of bowling advice. It’s all in the pricy reactive ball. Actually, even semi-pro bowlers travel with at least two bowling balls to pull off aggressive hooks, according to many factors. However begginers might want to not try to be fancy, and avoid a ball that is too heavy for you. Many serious bowlers opt for bowling balls with synthetic surface. Steer clear of them, because these pro bowling balls might make even decent talents seem a fool. That’s our first 3 bowling tips. I’ll be back with another 3 next month.

Thanks, Frank Chase

We play for our team (the “Strykers”) for a league for a major bowling ball retailer down in Plano, Texas. I offer guidance to beginning bowlers at my blog and in the pro shop. Lastly, I should wave hello at our crew heading into tournament play.
