Come November, another party will be battling it out against Senators Barack Obama and John McCain. The Green Party, a third party that operates in partnership with the European Federation of Green Parties and the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas, gathered a total of 119,859 (or 0.1%) votes during the 2004 Presidential Elections. They are looking to greatly improve this statistic this year now that they have introduced their presidential candidate in the person of Cynthia McKinney, a former Democratic Representative. McKinney is known as the 1st black woman to represent Georgia in the House of Representatives, where she had stayed in office for 6 consecutive terms. Like the rest of the Green Party members, McKinney believes that proper caring for the Earth’s natural resources is the key to fulfilling the country’s role in realizing the world’s improvement. Although the Green Party is not as popular as the two mainstream parties, Democratic and Republican, its participation in the upcoming elections cannot be shrugged off. They may have gotten a very minimal share of votes in the last elections, but that may change now especially since many are still quite undecided about whom they will vote for. Another crucial factor is the reality that more and more people are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental problems faced by the world today. In all probability, McKinney’s candidacy will offer fresh perspectives for some Americans. So, beware Obama and McCain; the Green Party may very well fight it out till the end!
